As Tamil Nadu strengthens its position as one of India’s key manufacturing hubs, the conversation is moving beyond production and scale towards a more important question: how can industry grow while becoming more resilient, resource-efficient and sustainable?
That question is at the centre of the CII Tamil Nadu Sustainable Manufacturing Summit 2026, being held today, 24 August in Chennai, by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Tamil Nadu. The summit is themed “Driving Industrial Excellence through Sustainability.” CII lists the summit as part of its current manufacturing and sustainability programme.
The discussion is particularly relevant for Tamil Nadu, where manufacturing competitiveness is increasingly linked with technology, productivity and responsible growth.
What is the industry discussing?
The summit brings attention to several issues that are quickly becoming business priorities:
- Resource efficiency — using energy, water and materials more effectively
- AI & technology — using digital solutions to make manufacturing smarter and more efficient
- Climate resilience — preparing factories and supply chains for changing climate conditions
- Regulatory & market readiness — responding to evolving sustainability expectations
- Carbon-constrained manufacturing — preparing businesses for a lower-carbon economy
These are no longer issues limited to sustainability teams. They increasingly affect costs, competitiveness, market access, investment and long-term business resilience.
What makes the summit particularly relevant from an association perspective is the role CII is playing in bringing industry, policymakers, technology providers, financial institutions and other stakeholders into the same conversation.
That is where industry associations can make a difference—not simply by representing businesses, but by creating platforms for knowledge-sharing, collaboration and practical solutions.
CII’s wider manufacturing work has also focused on digitalisation, automation, Industry 4.0 and sustainable manufacturing, reflecting the growing connection between technology and responsible industrial growth.
For manufacturers, the real question is therefore changing.
It is no longer simply “How do we become more sustainable?”
It is: “How can sustainability make us more competitive?”
